Canonical today announced that it has joined the SAMSUNG ARTIK™ IoT ecosystem to enable faster development and deployment of IoT applications and services. Canonical is publishing a developer image of ‘snappy’ Ubuntu Core optimized for the SAMSUNG ARTIK 5 and 10 modules, which will be made available on developer.ubuntu.com in the next several weeks.
With a tiered architecture built for performance, optimized power consumption, memory utilization and footprint, SAMSUNG ARTIK modules are designed for a variety of applications – from wearables and end-nodes to powerful hubs with integrated wireless capabilities, local processing and analytics. The ‘best-in-class’ security solution starts with a hardware Secure Element (SE), and adds software Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Developers can benefit from the various wireless connectivity options (Zigbee, BLE, Wi-Fi) to securely connect various sensors around the house to the cloud and rely on Ubuntu Core’s capabilities to manage the security of devices once deployed by remotely and reliably upgrading the software running on these devices.

slock.it is a sharing economy company, bringing blockchain technology and IoT together to build smart homes and smart home appliances that are more secure and autonomous. During Mobile World Congress, they will be demoing a decentralized house rental solution based on the blockchain and built on the SAMSUNG ARTIK platform and Ubuntu Core.
The slock.it team have been leveraging the availability of multiple blockchain libraries on Ubuntu (Ethereum project) in order to build their solution. They were particularly attracted to the strong combined security pedigree of the SAMSUNG ARTIK platform and Ubuntu Core – essential to a blockchain application. They have also chosen the SAMSUNG ARTIK platform for its powerful computing capacity particularly suited to compute intensive applications, including local data analytics.
