The new AWS Marketplace for Containers, launched this week at AWS Re:Invent, provides another fantastic opportunity for developers across public, private and multi-cloud environments to use Ubuntu. The AWS Marketplace provides customers with a trusted selection of container software options to discover and deploy to Amazon ECS (Amazon Elastic Container Services) and Amazon EKS (Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes).
From Docker to Kubernetes, Ubuntu is the operating system of choice for container operations. It has been optimised and secured for a wide range of workloads on both clouds and devices.
With AWS Marketplace for Containers, developers and operators have access to the familiar, secure and supported Ubuntu platform directly from within their AWS environment. They can create Ubuntu containers ‘on tap’ without the need to incur the time and bandwidth costs of OS installation to use as a base layer to build custom images or to directly deploy their apps.
Having fast, convenient access to a Canonical base container for Ubuntu is also highly relevant to organisations planning scale-out deployments of their applications on Kubernetes. Recently, our work with AWS saw customers able to benefit from Ubuntu optimisation by Amazon on their Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes, thanks to Ubuntu worker nodes hosting high-performance Docker containers in AWS. The real advantage is that highly sought after portability for enterprise container workloads that are developed on Ubuntu workstations and operated in private infrastructure with Canonical’s distribution of upstream Kubernetes.
This development, which was built on minimal Ubuntu images, results in up to 30% faster kernel boot speeds, shaving small numbers down even further when expanded exponentially this makes a real difference to costs and performance. Ubuntu is the most widely used container host OS – especially for deployments of upstream K8s. For users, with Ubuntu as their Amazon EKS container host, this means that they have the exact same runtime dynamics on AWS as on other Ubuntu-based K8s deployments in private infrastructure.
